KINGSTON – Fire early Monday afternoon heavily damaged a second-floor apartment and extended into the attic at 109 Rondout Drive, the Rondout Gardens Apartments.
A woman with a newborn baby were in the apartment when the fire broke out. A smoke detector saved then when it sounded. She was able to escape along with her baby without any injuries to either.
Bright orange flames shot out of an apartment window when firefighters arrived at 12:52 p.m. and by 1:04 p.m., the fire was contained.
The three-alarm blaze brought out 17 Kingston firefighters to the scene with another 15manning other apparatus to cover other potential calls for service at the same time.
A mutual aid FAST team from the Stone Ridge Fire Department respond to the scene. Esopus and Port Ewen Fire responded to central station for standby coverage.
The fire was investigated by the Kingston Fire Investigation Unit and determined to be accidental although still under investigation.
Also assisting at the scene was the Kingston City Police Department and Central Hudson Gas and Electric.
