MONTICELLO – The Sullivan County Legislature has gone on record asking the state not to move its health department office from Monticello to neighboring Orange County.

Sullivan Legislature Chairman Rob Doherty said it would have a detrimental effect on a county that is at the bottom of the state’s health rankings.

“When you are ranking 61 out of 62 in health rankings, it would be nice to have your department of health in your county and not having people visit us instead of having people living here and understanding the situation because they live through it with us,” he said.

Doherty said the state told him they already have space in Orange County and will be pulling out of Sullivan in six months, moving the 24 state workers to the new facility.

The chairman said he has asked Congressman Antonio Delgado to speak to Governor Hochul about keeping the health office in Monticello.
