TSA officers catch guns at airport checkpoints

NEW YORK – The Transportation Security Administration confiscated one gun at New York Stewart International Airport in 2021, the same number as in 2020. No firearms were caught at Westchester County Airport last year, according to the federal agency.

By comparison, 12 guns were seized at Newark Liberty International last year while nine were confiscated at JFK and four at LaGuardia.

Nationwide, TSA officers detected 5,972 firearms at airport security checkpoints in 2021, a significant increase from the 3,257 detected in 2020 and the 4,432 detected p-re-pandemic in 2019.

The rate of guns caught at checkpoints nationwide came to 10.2 firearms per million passengers in 2021. Of the guns seized in 2021, approximately 86 percent were loaded.
