Heidi Herzfeld of the Auxillary joins Santa and one of one of the little ones

TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE – Santa delivered gifts and holiday cheer to children at the VFW Post 170 in the Town of Poughkeepsie on Saturday.  Nearly 20 children had the opportunity to visit with the jolly old elf who spends his spare time as the post commander for post 170, Bernie Herzfeld.

The Post 170 Auxillary was given the funds to shop for the children of the families of members and the auxiliary.  Auxiliary members Dawn Roger and Heidi Herzfeld did the gift shopping and wrapping that brought smiles to the faces of the kids.

Prior to the arrival of Santa, the children and their families were treated to pizza and ice cream.  Two young twin girls dressed in holiday best apparently consumed a few candy canes and other sugary treats that created a high-energy game of “catch me if you can” with their VFW member and grandfather trying to corral them at the end of the day.

In addition to the party, the post adopted a veteran and his family to make the holiday season special.  The grandfather, a veteran, joined his daughter and her three children to an afternoon involving receiving gifts that the VFW purchased for them on behalf of Santa.

“Days like this are always enjoyable and the auxiliary members, especially Dawn and Heidi, really made the event special for the families,” said Commander Herzfeld.
