SLATE HILL – A bullet was found in the Minisink Valley Middle School gymnasium bleachers following a boys’ modified basketball game on Thursday and State Police are investigating how it got there.

In a letter to the community, School Superintendent Brian Monahan said the boys who found the bullet appropriately gave it to a member of the administration who was on site and that person called the State Police.

Troopers spoke with the boys who found the ammunition and determined “there was no reason to believe they had any role in placing the bullet in the gym,” Monahan wrote.

Over the nighttime hours, police brought specially trained K-9s into the building to conduct a thorough search and fully cleared the school, he said.

“In the interest of transparency, and particularly in light of recent news reports involving firearms and ammunition, we want to alert you about last night’s finding,” Monahan wrote. “At the same time, we want to assure you that all proper steps were followed in the reporting of this finding. These students, the coach and administrator did the right thing. When they found something suspicious, they immediately reported it.”
