NEWBURGH – Because of the recent increase in gun violence in Newburgh, the city council Monday night approved the creation of a short-term multi-agency police task force.

Councilman Omari Shakur, who has been opposed to out-of-city police coming into Newburgh – particularly State Police – has one concern about the new initiative.

“I would like to see different agencies coming into our community to have video cameras so we can see what is going on,” he said.

Councilman Anthony Grice said while the city could use the additional help in keeping a lid on crime, he doesn’t want to see “over-policing.”
