ALBANY – As the price of gas at the pump continues to inch upward in recent weeks, State Senator Sue Serino (R, Hyde Park) is calling on the state to suspend the gas tax to save New Yorkers money.

In a letter to Governor Hochul, Serino has urged her to use her authority to suspend the tax immediately.

At 46.19 cents per gallon, New York ranks ninth for highest gas tax in the nation, according to the Tax Foundation, an independent tax policy nonprofit.

Serino said if the proposed gas tax of 55 cents were added, New York would become the holder of the highest overall gas tax (101.19 cents) in the nation, exceeding California’s current tax at 66.98 cents.

The senator has also launched a petition for residents to express their concern about gas tax and the rising cost of the fuel.
