NEWBURGH – A street sweeper pilot program has begun in the City of Newburgh with a dual purpose of cleaning the streets and providing jobs.

The program is the brainchild of Mayor Torrance Harvey.

“It employs formerly incarcerated men and women who need temporary employment and make about $15 or $16 an hour to street sweep,” he said.

The $100,000 for the program is coming from the city and its planning department.

The mayor said it is a collaboration with the Regional Economic Community Action Program and the District Attorney’s “GIVE” gun violence prevention program.
