YONKERS – A domestic argument involving a Yonkers couple has resulted in the death of a man and a woman being charged with vehicular manslaughter.

Yonkers Police said Mercedes Vargas, 54, attempted to leave the scene on Stanley Place in a 2012 Subaru Forrester when the victim, identified as Martires Susana-Pena, 42, ended up on the hood of the vehicle. Vargas drove off at a high rate of speed and crashed through the access gate to school property at the Eugenia Maria De Hostos Microsociety School of Stanley Place striking a barrier and school wall.

Susana-Pena was pronounced dead at the scene. Vargas sustained injuries but was expected to survive.

Police theorize the victim may have been trying to prevent Vargas from driving as she was inebriated and either through his actions or hers, he wound up on the hood of the car.

Vargas was charged with vehicular manslaughter and felony driving while intoxicated. She was remanded to the Westchester County Jail pending future court action.
