ALBANY – Eight more people died from the coronavirus in the Hudson Valley/Catskills on Friday, the State Health Department reported.
Two people lost their battle with the deadly disease in both Dutchess and Westchester counties while one person died in each Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Ulster.
Statewide since the pandemic began, 55,654 people died in the state.
There were also 623 new positive cases reported on Friday in the region. Statewide there were 5,030 new cases. Since the pandemic began, 2,281,283 people tested positive.
Vaccinations and mask wearing in indoor settings are believed to be the best defense against COVID-19.
