Gun recovered in Newburgh assault

NEWBURGH – An early morning gang assault on Broadway resulted in the arrests of two men and police recovered an illegally possessed handgun during the investigation.  The incident occurred in front of the Oasis Bar, 203 Broadway, on Sunday, August 29, at around 3 a.m.

According to Police Chief Anthony Geraci, at least five Hispanic men assaulted a 38-year-old Newburgh resident in front of the bar.  While the man was being beaten, one of the suspects attempted to shoot the victim but the gun malfunctioned.  When the gun failed to fire, the suspect began beating the victim in the head and face with the weapon.

The attack resulted in the man being treated for serious physical injuries including multiple lacerations to his face that required stitches to close the wounds.  The man also sustained a broken eye orbital that has resulted in his vision being impaired.

On Monday morning, August 30, the investigating detectives arrested two of the men suspected to have taken part in the attack.  Gavino Vaquero, 24, and Jhonathan Diaz Ramos, known as “Gasper”, 21, and charged them with felony armed robbery.  Both men reside in the City of Newburgh.

The detectives recovered a 9mm Ruger semi-automatic pistol and a loaded high-capacity magazine.

Police are continuing to investigate the gang-style assault and are asking for anyone with information to contact the Detective Division at 845-569-7509.
