NEWBURGH – From Johnston Street to Liberty Street, Broadway in the City of Newburgh was alive in the celebration of National Night Out on Tuesday as an endeavor to promote the strengthening of relationships between local law enforcement and the community it serves.
National Night Out (NNO) encourages community building by bringing elected officials, community leaders, law enforcement, religious leaders and residents together with fun and family friendly activities. Free food, athletic demonstrations, the thumping of popular music and dancing in the street, set the tone for a relaxed evening between all parties.
Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler, known for his tough stance on crime, was on hand. As the sound of children laughing wafted in the air, he spoke with adults who expressed growing concern about the recent rise in crime. When asked his opinion on the importance such events have in reducing crime, Hoovler explained that residents have a role in preventing crime and if crime has occurred, their willingness in partnering with the police leads to greater numbers of crime being solved. Events such as NNO provide a pathway for fostering the type of relationships that go into building these important relationships.
Following 2020’s COVID related hiatus, this year’s NNO event was smaller than previous years when 60 to 70 community-based services set up booths. This year saw approximately 40 such booths. When asked why there was a decrease in numbers, Maritza Wilson, organizer of the
NNO even, said there is both concern and caution throughout the city about COVID. There is also growing anxiety about a resurgence of crime in the city.
Still, hope abounds and as expressed by Sabrina Dolfinger, treasurer of the Local chapter of the NAACP, “This is a great city and a great community. We have a lot of great people working toward bringing the City of Newburgh to where it belongs.”
