Area political reaction to Cuomo report

MID-HUDSON – Public officials are speaking out over the report that found that Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo sexually harassed current and past female state workers and others.

Ulster County Comptroller March Gallagher, a Democrat who experienced sexual harassment while working in the public sector, said she is “deeply shaken” by the attorney general’s findings of sexual harassment by Cuomo. She said she “no longer has confidence” in Cuomo, who she said should resign.

Dutchess County Comptroller Robin Lois, a Democrat, said she has strived to stay out of politics, but the details of this harassment prompted her to call for Cuomo’s resignation.

U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, both Democrats, called for the governor to step down.

State Senator Mike Martucci (R, New Hampton) said based on the attorney general’s investigative findings, Cuomo is “utterly unfit to continue to serve as governor.”

Senator James Skoufis (D, Cornwall) called the report “damning” and said Cuomo’s “gobsmacking attempt to deflect, explain away, and position himself as the victim of misinformation is beyond unacceptable.” Skoufis said for the good of the state, Cuomo should resign.

Senator Pete Harckham (D, Mt. Kisco) said not only should Cuomo resign, but “Those on his staff involved in the unlawful retaliation and coverup of the crimes must also resign.”

Assemblyman Colin Schmitt (R, New Windsor) called for the governor’s resignation. “No one is above the law including Andrew Cuomo,” said Schmitt.

Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther (D, Forestburgh) added her voice to the call for resignation.

Assemblywoman Didi Barrett (D, Hudson) said t he AG’s report “makes clear that this governor has violated state and federal laws, including policies he signed into law, and he should step down now.”

Congressman Mondaire Jones (D, NY-17) reiterated the demand he made in March when he called on Cuomo to step down.

Ulster County Executive Patrick Ryan, a Democrat, said Cuomo’s actions “were not only morally reprehensible, but also violated multiple state and federal laws.” Ryan said Cuomo is “unfit for public office and must resign immediately.”

The Westchester County Board of Legislators and the Columbia County Democratic Committee added their voices to the call for Cuomo to step down.
