NEWBURGH – Visitors to the Town of Newburgh will now be paying a five percent local room tax in addition to the five percent imposed by Orange County.

The new tax applies to hotels, motels and B&B rentals and is expected to generate between $500,000 and $1 million annually.

The law was first proposed by the late Councilman George Woolsey in 2007. In 2020, the bill was sponsored by Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson and State Senator James Skoufis and was signed into law by the governor in December.

While the town had sought permission to charge the local tax on visitors, it required state approval.
