NEW YORK – The contagiousness of the COVID-19 variant is causing major concern to the state government, which has already required all state employees to either be vaccinated or be tested weekly.

On Monday, Governor Cuomo announced that by Labor Day, all MTA and Port Authority employees in New York will be required to be vaccinated or be tested weekly.

The governor has already mandated that all patient-facing employees of state hospitals must be vaccinated.

In the event the variant’s spread is more rampant, he is suggesting that private businesses should require vaccinations to enter. If the numbers continue to rise, he said private hospitals, nursing homes and school districts should consider requiring vaccinations of employees.

Local governments should adopt the CDC’s current mask guidance to be on the safe side.

Unlike when COVID-19 first broke out and the governor issued executive order after executive order, the legislature stripped him of that authority and should there be a need for statewide laws to limit the spread of the variant, the state legislature would have to convene and adopt them.
