TOWN OF NEWBURGH – The electronic gaming casino proposed for the Newburgh Mall by Resorts World Catskills has cleared several major hurdles by the Newburgh Town Board.

Members approved a negative declaration of environmental impacts during their Monday night meeting and also approved a zoning change allowing for the casino.

Town Supervisor Gil Piaquadio said the casino will be the first and only such operation in the town and Orange County.

“The town has hosted similar uses in the past. An off-track betting facility was located at the Mid-Valley Mall for several years without incident, to my knowledge, and historically, Pine Point Casino at Orange Lake operated from the late 1800s until the 1950s hosting such entertainers as Frank Sinatra and Benny Goodman,” he said.

The town board also approved a host benefit agreement which will mean tens of thousands of dollars in benefits to the town and Orange County.
