Mount Vernon PD make arrest in Wednesday afternoon shooting

MOUNT VERNON – A Wednesday afternoon shooting at 34 Bell Avenue in Mount Vernon resulted in a 52-year-old man sustaining two gunshot wounds to the torso that required emergency surgery at Jacobi Medical Center.  A 19-year-old male from the same address was arrested a short time later in connection with the violent crime.

 

Officials say Mount Vernon Police responded to 34 Bell Avenue at 2:12 p.m. on May 19, for a reported shooting. Police learned that the victim had sustained two gunshot wounds and driven to the hospital by two fellow residents. 

 

The victim, identified by city officials as Mr. Barajas, underwent emergency surgery and is currently listed in stable but critical condition.

 

Mount Vernon detectives identified 19-year-old Kordell Reid, of 34 Bell Avenue as the suspect in this incident. Reid was located a few blocks from the home, by members of the Mount Vernon Police Department Violent Crime Unit and was transported to police headquarters for processing.

At approximately 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Mount Vernon detectives from the General Investigations Unit and Violent Crimes Unit executed a search warrant at Reid’s apartment where they located a .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun, two firearm magazines, and approximately 35 rounds of .45 caliber ammunition. 

 

Reid was subsequently charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon. 

 

Reid was arraigned before the Mount Vernon City Court on Thursday and subsequently transported to the Westchester County Jail, in lieu of $7,000 cash bail or a $20,000 bond.
