MONTICELLO – The Sullivan County Legislature has adopted a local law requiring that all campers and staff members, whether paid of volunteer, have evidence of immunity to measles or a valid medical exemption.

This is the third year the county has enacted the law.

Evidence of immunity includes written documentation from a health provider of one or more doses of measles containing vaccine administered on or after the first birthday of pre-school-age children and adults not at high risk or two doses of measles containing vaccine for school-age children and adults at high risk, including college students, healthcare personnel, and international travelers.

Other evidence may include laboratory evidence of immunity; lab confirmation of measles, or birth before 1957.

A camp operator may permit a camper or staff member who is in the process of receiving the measles vaccine to attend or work at camp.

In 2019, there were 19 confirmed cases in Sullivan County, with 426 confirmed cases in the state and 1,282 in the United States.
