MIDDLETOWN – The City of Middletown’s conversion to a sleek, more efficient method of garbage collection will begin later this year.

The city will begin to distribute large, heavy-duty garbage bins to all city residents. Each will receive two – one for recyclables and the other for household garbage.

They will replace plastic bags and other types of bags and cans placed curbside once the new system is up and running in the fall, said Mayor Joseph DeStefano.

“In the end, it will be better for our workers, it will be better for our city. It will be cleaner. The animals, the crows, can’t get in and throw the garbage all around, and it will be so much more efficient, and better for the taxpayers because we are going from three-man trucks to one-man trucks eventually, once everyone gets accustomed to the system,” he said.

Three new trucks, at a cost of just under $1 million, are on order. They will be similar to those used by some area commercial haulers with an arm that extends, picks up the can, and dumps it into the truck.
