GOSHEN – Kids across Orange County, ages five to 18, are invited to participate in District Attorney David Hoovler’s first Youth Fishing Derby. The event, to run from April 1 to September 6, is open to children or grandchildren of county residents.

The derby is part of Hoovler’s outreach program and is aimed at encouraging youth to participate in an outdoor sport. “Get hooked in fishing, not drugs,” the DA said.

Ten winners will receive a prize package including a tackle box, fishing kit. Spin lure, sunglasses and other items, and one winner, drawn at random, will receive a Bass Pro Shops $100 gift card.

The program is funded personally by Hoovler with no taxpayer money being used.

Entry into the derby is free. All fish entered in the contest must be legally caught from anywhere in the state. All fishing regulations must be followed.

Fresh and saltwater fish are eligible to be entered.

To enter, email a photo of the contestant holding the fish, as well as the child’s first name and an adult contact phone number, to: dafishingcontest@gmail.com.

Each angler can enter up to three fish during the contest, to have multiple chances to win. Ten winners will be drawn at random from the entries.

“I wish good luck to all our young anglers,” said Hoovler. “I hope that you enjoy your time in our great outdoors.”
