NEWBURGH – A 25-year-old City of Newburgh man wanted on an active state parole warrant is in the Orange County Jail following an incident on Sunday in which he fought with a state trooper, grabbed the officer’s taser and tried to use it.
Antwonn Williams, Jr. was arraigned virtually and remanded to the Orange County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail, $25,000 bond or $100,000 partially secured bond.
He was charged with assault and robbery, both as felonies, and misdemeanors of menacing, resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration and false personation, as well as unlawful possession of marijuana.
The trooper was on patrol on Sunday, February 14 and spotted a BMW traveling south on Dubois Street in Newburgh committing a traffic violation.
The trooper stopped the vehicle and interviewed the driver who identified himself as Davata Williams, later confirmed to be Antwonn Williams.
As he got out of the car, he pushed the trooper and began to run south on Dubois Street and on to North Miller where Williams and the trooper began to fight.
Williams grabbed the trooper’s taser and attempted to shoot him with it, but it failed. He fled again and was taken not custody with the assistance of Newburgh City Police.
The trooper was injured, treated and released at Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital.
