NEWBURGH – City Councilman Omari Shakur cast the sole “no” vote when the Newburgh council voted to name attorney Joanne Matthews Forbes as city court judge on Monday night.
Shakur supported one of the five other candidates, attorney Erik Indzonka, who the councilman said has three decades of legal experience in Newburgh.
“Because of his relationship already with the City of Newburgh, 31 years experience; 31 years of dealing with the Newburgh City Court, being in this courtroom, knowing what he is up against, I felt he was the best candidate on paper and off paper,” Shakur said.
The councilman said Forbes never stepped foot in Newburgh City Court and knows nothing about it.
