Fire damages portion of Poughkeepsie residence

Heavy smoke coming from the garage at 39 S. Grand Avenue

POUGHKEEPSIE – Firefighters from Poughkeepsie, Arlington, and Fairview Fire Departments battled a fire at 39 South Grand Avenue in the city on Sunday, which caused extensive damage to a portion of the residential structure.

According to Poughkeepsie Fire Chief Mark Johnson, 911 dispatch received a call reporting the fire at 12:13 p.m.  The first arriving firefighters reported seeing fire showing from the garage in the rear of the building.

Some firefighters worked to extinguish the fire while others made a full search of the structure, looking for occupants.  None were found.

The fire was under control approximately 20 minutes after arrival, with the majority of the damage contained to the garage area with some smoke and water damage to a portion of the house.

Chief Johnson said, “No civilians or firefighters sustained injuries and the origin of the fire is still under investigation.”
