GOSHEN – A two-year veteran of the Goshen Village Police Department was injured Monday afternoon when he swerved to avoid striking another vehicle that made an illegal U-turn in front of him, Police Chief James Watt said.

Officer Justin Belez, 29, was driving in the area of 100 Canal Street when the accident occurred.

Watt said the patrol car avoided hitting the other vehicle, but struck a curb, a parking meter and a column on a building that collapsed into the structure.

The patrol car tipped over on its side with the officer climbing out on his own.

Belez was transported to Garnet Health Medical Center in the Town of Wallkill where he was treated for head, neck, and back pain.
