WASHINGTON – The Rockland County Department of Public Transportation has been awarded $18.5 million in CARES Act emergency funding to mitigate the impact of the coronavirus crisis on local transit systems.

The funds will be used for PPE and costs necessary to operate, maintain and manage the Transport of Rockland (TOR) and TRIPS bus systems.

“As COVID-19 cases continue to increase here in Rockland, keeping the staff who operate our public transportation services and their passengers safe is crucial,” said County Executive Ed Day. “Residents rely on these services to shop for groceries, visit pharmacies and see their doctor. This funding will ensure the uninterrupted continuity of bus service while also keeping our public transportation system safe and clean.”

TOR is the county’s public bus system while TRIPS is the county’s paratransit bus service supporting residents with disabilities and senior citizens.

The funding was announced by Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand.
