WEST POINT – Approximately 50 volunteers braved wind-swept rain and bitter cold to honor the heroic service of U.S soldiers by laying wreaths at all of the more than 7,000 graves in the cemetery at the United States Military Academy at West Point last Saturday.

Through its Community Investment Committee, Orange and Rockland Utilities fielded a volunteer team and donated $5,000 to the 11th annual Wreaths at West Point observance, a local project affiliated with the Wreaths Across America program.

Because of large-gathering restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic CDC guidelines, O&R was permitted to field only three volunteers for this year’s effort. Last year, an O&R volunteer team of 55 workers participated in the event.

West Point’s cemetery is one of nearly 1,600 veterans’ cemeteries across the nation that place wreaths, including 248,000 wreaths on the graves at Arlington National Cemetery.
