KINGSTON – Just over $2 million in upgrades will be coming to Ulster County Area Transit funded by state and federal money.

UCAT was awarded just under $1.2 million from the Federal Transit Administration to purchase five buses to replace vehicles that have reached the end of their useful life.

The State Department of Transportation also awarded UCAT almost $835,000 to help offset the federal funding and to fund three zero-emission electric transit buses.

As a result of the federal and state money, the county will not need to contribute capital budget dollars to those projects.

“This funding will help ensure that UCAT is among the first small transit agencies to champion electric buses and that Ulster County continues to lead the way  in promoting a more sustainable future through the continued investment in clean energy to power our local transportation,” said County Executive Patrick Ryan.
