GOSHEN- Happy hour on any Friday usually signifies the end of the workweek and beginning of the weekend.

But these temporary celebrations can end up being anything but happy, and  Orange County District Attorney Dave Hoovler said the number one chance of being victimized by a crime in Orange County is being struck by a drunk driver on a Friday or Saturday evening between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m..

“It’s a dangerous time of the year when you involve alcohol and transportation,” he said.

So Hoovler highlighted an initiative dubbed “Operation Sticker Shock” to raise awareness to the hazards of alcohol consumption and drunken driving during the upcoming the holiday season through the first days of 2021.

“Traditionally between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, it’s a very deadly time of the year,” he said. “We have a lot of traffic related accidents that involve alcohol. We have a lot of underage drinking, and our goal here today is to raise awareness and remind people to be responsible whenever they are going out, drinking at home or whatever they are doing. A few drinks here, a few drinks there, and you are over the limit.”
