Police recover stolen handgun during traffic stop

POUGHKEEPSIE – City of Poughkeepsie police officers recovered a stolen .357 handgun during a traffic stop on Friday night.  Two people have been arrested and charged with felonies after an investigation.

A vehicle occupied by a man and a woman was stopped by police.  As the officer approached, a strong odor of marijuana was detected coming from the car.  The occupants were ordered out of the car and a search of the vehicle was conducted.

During the search, police discovered a loaded .357 handgun and additional drugs.

39-year-old Richard Whitted and 41-year-old Nucole Lewis were arrested.  Both individuals were charged with felonies of criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of stolen property.  Both Whitted and Lewis were also charged with misdemeanor criminal possession of a controlled substance.

The accused were held in custody pending arraignment.
