Saugerties man charged with shooting woman

Saugerties Police Chief Joe Sinagra has been placed on paid administrative leave.

SAUGERTIES – A 43-year-old Saugerties man is in the Ulster County Jail for allegedly shooting a woman in the leg with a shotgun.

Saugerties Police said William “Billy” Babcock has been charged with assault, criminal possession of a firearm, and reckless endangerment.

On November 5, police responded to a call of a woman being shot at 2731 Route 9W in the Town of Saugerties.

Investigation found that Babcock allegedly assaulted a 22-year-old man at the residence, punching him several times in the face before the victim fled.

As the man was standing outside the home, Babcock fired a 12-gauge shotgun through the living room window, striking a 48-year-old woman.

At that point, police said a fight broke out between Babcock and other individuals at the scene; Babcock sustained injures in that assault.

Babcock and the female victim where transported by DIAZ Ambulance to Health Alliance Hospital Broadway Campus in Kingston.

On November 6, Saugerties detectives with assistance of the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, recovered the shotgun, which had been tossed into the Esopus Creek.

Babcock is a registered sex offender and predicate felony.

State Police and the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the investigation.
