Putnam County man murdered near Old Forge

WEBB – On September 5, 2020, at 8:27 p.m., the Town of Webb and Town of Inlet Police responded to a reported home invasion at 168 Dan-Bar Acres Road in the town of Webb, Herkimer County.

The preliminary investigation has determined that 43-year-old Stephen Swanton of Rochester was involved in a verbal altercation with two individuals outside his Dan-Bar Acres Road residence.  The dispute stemmed from an earlier argument at a party down the road from Swanton’s residence.  During the altercation, it appears Swanton shot both individuals with a handgun in his driveway.

Swanton was taken into custody by officers from the Town of Webb and Inlet Police Departments without incident.

Patterson resident Scott Krempler, age 50, was pronounced deceased at the scene. 55-year-old William Robertello of Oriskany was transported via LifeNet to Upstate University Hospital where he was treated for a gunshot wound and released.

Swanton has been arrested and charged with Murder 2nd degree, a class A-1 felony, and Attempted Murder 2nd degree, a class “A-II” felony.

Swanton was arraigned via Skype and remanded to the Herkimer County Jail on no bail.

The investigation is continuing by the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

State Police were assisted at the scene by Town of Webb Police, Town of Inlet Police, Herkimer County District Attorney’s Office, LifeNet and Old Forge Ambulance.
