Sullivan County to begin taxing energy

ALBANY – Sullivan County’s residential energy tax, enacted to offset the COVID-19 budget deficit goes into effect on September 1, according to the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.

The 4% local sales and use tax will be collected until the legislation expires on February 28, 2023.  The tax applies to the retail sale of residential energy sources and services.

The temporary tax applies to the following:

  • Natural gas
  • Propane sold in containers of 100 pounds or more
  • Electricity
  • Steam
  • Gas, electric, and steam services
  • Fuel oil (except highway diesel fuel)
  • Coal
  • Wood used for heating
