TOWN OF ULSTER – Every level of local government is considering ways to reduce costs as COVID-19 continues.

In the Town of Ulster, Supervisor James Quigley said they are considering an early retirement program.

“We took it from a point of view of trying to find people who have paid their dues, put their time in, maybe at the end of their career, could be motivated a little bit to step out of the way to save a younger employee’s job, a younger employee who has a family who needs the medical insurance,” he said.

The town has roughly 95 fulltime employees with only a handful eligible, Quigley said.

The supervisor said the Pause on the economy has resulted in eliminating overtime and the cost of fuel has gone down from $2.80 per gallon this time last year to 80-cents to $1 this year.
