Orangeburg man fights with police

NYACK – An Orangeburg man has been charged with felony assault and other crimes for allegedly fighting with an Orangetown Police officer.

An officer had stopped Peter Engel, 33, for smoking what was alleged to be marijuana on a public sidewalk.

While being placed under arrest, Engel fled on foot, stopped and fought with the officer. He violently resisted being handcuffed until a second officer arrived to assist. One officer was injured.

Engel was charged with assault, resisting arrest and unlawful possession of marijuana.

He was released on his own recognizance pending a future court appearance.
