POUGHKEEPSIE – City firefighters battled a blaze at 318 Mill Street (westbound arterial) that was called in around 3:30 Monday morning.  First arriving units encountered fire on the second floor of the building and it was spreading at a rapid rate.

According to Fire Chief Mark Johnson, unsafe floor conditions led to one firefighter partially falling through the floor.  A decision was made to pull all of the firefighters out of the building and attack the fire from the street.

With the assistance of Arlington and Fairview fire departments, the blaze was almost completely extinguished by 7:30 a.m.  The westbound arterial was closed between North Hamilton Street and Civic Center Plaza.  As of 10:15 a.m., the westbound portion of Mill Street had one lane opened while Poughkeepsie firefighters worked to extinguish hot spots in both 318 and 316. Mill Street.

Also at the scene were medics from Mobile Life Support Services and employees of Central Hudson.  The Red Cross arrived at the scene around 9:00 a.m. to assist those displaced by the fire.

Chief Johnson said that the cause and origin of the fire are currently under investigation.
