HUNTER – An 11-year-old boy fell to his death while hiking with his father and other adults, the Greene County Sheriff’s Office reports.
The incident occurred Saturday afternoon at Platte Clove in the Town of Hunter. The sheriff’s office said that the boy was wearing appropriate ice-hiking gear, including a helmet.
The child fell into a very deep ravine and forest rangers indicated that recovery operations would be too risky on Saturday evening because of the 300 foot depth. Rescuers, including rope-rescue teams from Ulster County, recovered the boy on Sunday.
The name of the child has not been released.
