POUGHKEEPSIE — The City of Poughkeepsie Police Department is inviting the community to pay tribute to fallen Detective John Falcone by giving blood at a special blood drive on Monday, February 24th at the Italian Community Center at 227 Mill Street in Poughkeepsie.

Detective John Falcone dedicated his law enforcement career to protecting people in the neighborhoods he served. It has been nine years since Detective Falcone, an 18-year veteran, was killed in the line of duty while responding to a domestic violence incident. He died a hero by giving his life in order to save a young child on February 18, 2011.

“The department and its members take pride that they can work with the American Red Cross to fill a need in the community in memory of Det. Falcone. He would be proud of this annual drive and the fact that it serves to help so many in need of blood,” said Chief Thomas Pape, City of Poughkeepsie Police Department.

Detective Falcone’s heroic actions on that fateful day and his courageous service to his community will never be forgotten. A highway in Dutchess County was renamed in his honor, so residents will remember his bravery. But, for the men and women who worked alongside him—not a moment has passed that they don’t think about their fallen colleague.

The City of Poughkeepsie Police Department encourages members of law enforcement and emergency responders who served with Detective Falcone, and members of the community who want to give back to come out and donate at this memorial blood drive.

Blood is routinely transfused to patients with cancer and other diseases, premature babies, organ transplant recipients and trauma victims, according to the Red Cross.

Donors with all blood types, particularly O negative, A negative and B negative, and platelet donors are urged to make a donation appointment. A blood supply supported by donors as diverse as the patients they can help is important to help ensure the right blood product is available at the right time.

Appointments to donate at this blood drive can be made online at https://www.redcrossblood.org/give.html/donation-time.

or simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
