GOSHEN – A Middletown man was sentenced by Orange County Court Judge Craig Stephen Brown to nine years in state prison and five years of post-release supervision in connection with a September 21, 2019 slashing of a man outside a bar in the Town of Wallkill.

Barry Cooper, 27, pled guilty to first-degree assault on November 21, 2019. He admitted having slashed the victim in the face with a sharp-edged object at about 3:30 a.m. outside a closed bar on Route 211.

Prosecutors argued the victim was an innocent bystander who had attempted to intervene and diffuse an argument between the DJ who had just left the bar and Cooper and others who were with Cooper.

The victim suffered serious injuries to his face as a result of the slashing.

“A state prison sentence was clearly warranted in this case,” said District Attorney David Hoovler. “It is both tragic and ironic that this victim, who was altruistically attempting to prevent violence, must now carry the marks of this defendant’s cowardly and senseless attack on his face.”

The case was prosecuted by Assistant DA Michael Purcell.
