NYACK – It has been almost two years since the new bridge spanning the Hudson River between Nyack and Tarrytown was named the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, named for the former governor and late father of current Governor Andrew Cuomo.

The twin-span structure replaced the more than 50-year-old Tappan Zee Bridge.

In the greater Rockland-Westchester area, many residents continue to oppose the bridge renaming since that area of the Hudson is the Tappan Zee.

State Senator David Carlucci

Among those who are not letting up on the effort to bring the name back to the region’s heritage is State Senator David Carlucci.

“The Tappan Zee is a cultural significance to us, particularly in the lower Hudson Valley, particularly in Rockland County, and it’s our identity,” he said. “So, we would like to see it called the Tappan Zee Bridge; that’s how we refer to it in the lower Hudson Valley and I think one day, we will be able to make that change.”

At this point, the issue doesn’t even appear to be on the radar in Albany.
