MILLBROOK The 12th annual Millbrook Literary Festival will take place on Saturday, May 9, 2020, at Millbrook Library. Festival-goers can look forward to learning about eclectic topics from the founding of the Audubon Society to drawing New Yorker cartoons and hearing from authors in every genre from fantasy to mystery. There will be a panel on the publishing industry and a workshop for aspiring children’s writers to get their work critiqued. As always, there will also be an engaging line-up for children, with picture book readings and an illustration workshop.

Along with scheduling a series of programs with authors for all ages, the Festival also sponsors two writing contests. The annual Scott Meyer Award is open to all Hudson/Harlem Valley writers aged 18 or over. This year the Festival will award a grand prize of $300 for an unpublished nonfiction piece on the topic of science or nature and two runners-up will each receive $150. The winning piece will be selected from among finalists by acclaimed author Akiko Busch.

The Festival’s annual Young Writers Showcase will also be on the topic of science or nature. Children aged 8 to 18 can submit an original nonfiction piece of 300 words or less to this year’s competition. Finalists will be included in the Young Writers Showcase 2020 publication, and three gift cards to Merritt Bookstore will be awarded in two age groups; 8 to 12 and 13 to 18.

The deadline for all entries for both contests is April 13, 2020. Finalists will be notified by April 25, 2020, and the first-place winner of both the Scott Meyer Award and the Young Writers Showcase will be announced at the Festival. The winner and runners-up for each contest must be present at the Millbrook Literary Festival on May 9, 2020, to receive their prizes.

See the Millbrook Literary Festival website at https://millbrookliteraryfestival.org/ for further information on entry requirements for both contests and for updates on the 2020 line-up of Festival events.
