Greene County man perishes in house fire

ACRA – A 69-year old man who was the sole occupant of a single-family house at 886 Old State Route 23 in Acra died when fire destroyed his home just before 9 a.m. on Saturday, January 18.

The man, whose name has not been made public pending notification of relatives, died of smoke inhalation, according to the results of an autopsy.

The cause of the blaze that totally destroyed the building remains under investigation; however, police do not suspect foul play.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the State Police and the Cairo Police Department.

A passerby initially spotted the fire and called it in. Responding fire departments include Cairo, Round Top, Leeds, East Durham, Freehold, Greenville, Oak Hill Durham and Windham. Green County Paramedics and Cairo Ambulance personnel also responded.
