NEWBURGH – State Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson (D, Newburgh) and Senator James Skoufis (D, Woodbury) have secured $500,000 in state funds to repave streets in the City of Newburgh.

Between that money, other state funds and the city’s budgeted allotment, Newburgh will have about $1.3 million to repave its streets, many of which are in poor condition.

The lawmakers made the announcement while on First Street between Liberty and Grand streets, an area riddled with potholes.

Jacobson noted poor street conditions impact public safety and economic development. “When you are trying to promote the City of Newburgh and you have a business and you want them in here, if they break an axle on the way to the site, the odds are they are not coming back,” he said. “This half-million dollars is a tremendous amount because the city can get reimbursement from the CHPs program, Pave New Program and extreme weather.”

“The City of Newburgh’s roads have been left to deteriorate by the state for decades and with this funding, along with several local efforts, we are continuing to change course for the better,” said Skoufis.
