ALBANY – The governor has signed measures that hold harmless school districts that were penalized for the late filing of paperwork related to construction projects.

The Spackenkill Union Free School District had been levied a $5 million penalty.

Forgiving the charge is “a major win” for the school district, said Senator Susan Serino (R, Hyde Park)

The measure to eliminate the penalty was sponsored by Serino and Assemblywoman Didi Barrett (D, Hudson).

The project in question made improvements to classrooms, handicapped bathrooms and an elevator at Spackenkill High School.

The state had argued that a necessary final cost report associated with the project was not filed by the district in time to meet a deadline by the state education department.

The governor also signed legislation holding the Roscoe Central School District harmless for $1.1 million in aid, but vetoed $1.9 million for the Monticello Central School District.

The Roscoe legislation was sponsored by Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther and Senator Jennifer Metzger.
