NEWBURGH – The City of Newburgh will be temporarily transitioning its source of drinking water from the Catskill Aqueduct to Brown’s Pond on November 8.

The process will take approximately two to three days for the existing drinking water in the city’s water mains and water storage tanks to be consumed and fully replaced with filtered water from Brown’s Pond.

Newburgh will remain on Brown’s Pond as a source of drinking water for an estimated 10 weeks to accommodate a planned shutdown of the Catskill Aqueduct so that the New York City Department of Environmental Protection can conduct inspections and repairs on Aqueduct infrastructure.

Newburgh city residents can expect a seamless transition to this source water with no effect on water quality. The City of Newburgh will issue a notification in January 2020 when the Catskill Aqueduct is reactivated and Newburgh switches back to this source of water.
