STEWART AIRPORT – Construction continues on the $37 million federal inspection station at the New York Stewart International Airport terminal despite the fact that there is no international service at the moment.

Norwegian Air terminated its flights to Europe in mid-September because of the continued worldwide grounding of the Boeing 737 Max jets.

Despite that setback, work is moving ahead on the 20,000 square foot addition to the terminal building, which should be completed in about one year, said airport Development Director Michael Torelli.

“This past week, steel started to raise and the structure is going up, the foundation is completed, the walls are up and before you know it, by the end of October the structure will be there and then over the winter months, we will be doing the inside work,” Torelli said.

A new airport management group that will include a French airport management company, will be operating Stewart on a day-to-day basis for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. A key component of their mission will be to attract new service – both domestic and international.
