ALBANY – A bridge over the Thruway (I-287) in the Town of Harrison has been designated as the “NYPD Det. TSgt. Joseph G. Lemm Memorial Bridge” in memory of the man who was killed while serving his third tour of duty in the Middle East.

Lemm, a resident of West Harrison, was a member of the New York Air National Guard’s 105th Airlift Wing at New York Stewart International Airport.

Just before Christmas in 2015, he was killed in Afghanistan when his convoy was attacked by a suicide bomber. He had served two tours in Afghanistan and one in Iraq.

Lemm was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star for valor by his commanding officers for putting himself in front of the bomber to protect his fellow soldiers.

State legislation designates a bridge crossing over I-287, intersecting with Westchester Avenue in the Town of Harrison in his memory.
