GOSHEN – The top law enforcement officials from Orange and Sullivan counties have expressed their support for the widening of Route 17 from two to three lanes in each direction.

Orange County Sheriff Carl DuBois and Sullivan County Sheriff Michael Schiff met with representatives of 17-Forward-86, a coalition of stakeholders pushing for the additional lanes on the highway between Harriman and Monticello.

“Our officers are understandably concerned about the worsening traffic conditions on Route 17,” said DuBois. “As first responders, we know all too well the dangers tie-ups pose, and the difference a few minutes – even seconds – can make in a life-or-death situation.”

“The safety of our residents and visitors is our top priority,” said Schiff. “That’s why we support this initiative to improve mobility and help to reduce risks on our roads.”

The 17-Forward-86 campaign, referencing the highway’s eventual shot from New York Route 17 to Interstate 86, is seeking $500 million from the state to add the third lane.

DuBois and Schiff were briefed by Orange County Partnership President Maureen Halahan and Marc Baez, president of the Sullivan County Partnership for Economic Development.
