MIDDLETOWN – When the City of Middletown submits its state Consolidated Funding Application at the end of the week, it will include a request for $1.2 million toward construction of a $6 million downtown parking garage.

Should the state provide the funding, the city would seek additional sources as well as contribute its own portion to build the 200-car garage.

“We think in the long run it will be self-sustainable because of the success of the DRI program with the addition of several projects downtown like the Classy Leather building renovations – there will be 60 housing units there – that we will be able to contract park and cover the debt service for the building with possibly a small city subsidy,” Mayor Joseph DeStefano said.

Middletown was the first Hudson Valley city to receive a $10 million state Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant and that has begun to see a transformation and redevelopment of the city’s core area.
