NEW PALTZ – An estranged father and son are dead after agreeing to meet Saturday morning.

New Paltz police say Jeremy Kaartine, 22, of Saugerties, shot his father, Andrew Kaartine, 58, of Salisbury Mills, in the parking lot of the Plaza Diner, at about 11:00.

The victim was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Jeremy Kaartine fled in a car. An Ulster County Sheriff deputy saw the car heading north on the Thruway.  The car got off at exit 20 and headed north on Route 32.

The car eventually crashed and when deputies approached, they found Jeremy Kaartine dead of a self-inflicted gun wound.

A New Paltz Police news release does not mention a possible motive for the shooting.

Police say this was an isolated incident and there is no danger to the public.
