BLOOMING GROVE – Town Police in Blooming Grove recently took a complaint from a local business that reported receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be a representative of Orange and Rockland Utilities.

The caller told the business they were delinquent on their bill and gave them directions to buy gift cards from CVS in a very specific amount to cover the bill. The business contacted O&R directly and learned that they were not delinquent on the bill and that this was a scam.

Police said this scam is a little more advanced than most because upon following the caller’s call back instructions, there is a recording presenting the company as Orange and Rockland with an automated system. The system and person you speak to sound legitimate but they are not. The phone number used in this particular case was 800-433-0884.

If you are contacted by anyone claiming to be a representative, your best course of action is to contact Orange and Rockland at the phone number listed on your bill to confirm.
